Bulk Molding Compound (BMC)
BMC (DMC) material is short for Bulk (Dough) Molding Compound, or bulk molding compound. In China, it is commonly referred to as unsaturated polyester bulk molding compound. Its primary raw materials consist of a thoroughly mixed mass of chopped glass fibers (GF), unsaturated polyester resin (UP), calcium carbonate filler (MD), and various additives, forming a dough‑like prepreg. BMC materials were first introduced in the former West Germany and the United Kingdom in the 1960s, and subsequently experienced significant development in the United States and Japan during the 1970s and 1980s, respectively. Thanks to their excellent electrical properties, mechanical performance, heat resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, coupled with compatibility with a wide range of molding processes, BMC compounds can meet the diverse performance requirements of various products, making them increasingly popular among users.
Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) is a thermosetting plastic that combines various inert fillers, fiber‑reinforcing materials, catalysts, stabilizers, and pigments to form a paste‑like composite suitable for compression molding or injection molding. BMC is highly filled and reinforced with short fibers; glass fiber reinforcement typically ranges from 10% to 30%, with fiber lengths usually between 1/32 inch and 1/2 inch (12.5 mm).
Depending on the specific end-use application, the formulated composite materials offer precise dimensional control, excellent flame retardancy and arc‑resistance, high dielectric strength, superior corrosion and fouling resistance, outstanding mechanical properties, low shrinkage, and stable color. Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) exhibits exceptional flow characteristics as well as excellent insulating and flame‑retardant properties, making it ideally suited for a wide range of applications that demand tight tolerances and precise dimensions. The material is available in 75 colors and can withstand powder coating or water‑based finishes.
