SMC material, sheet molding compound
SMC composites are a type of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Their primary constituents include glass fiber (specialized yarn), mineral filler, and various additives. First developed in Europe in the early 1960s, this technology was subsequently adopted in the United States and Japan around 1965. In China, at the end of the 1980s, advanced SMC production lines and manufacturing processes were introduced from abroad.
Characteristics
The unique properties of SMC composite materials address the shortcomings of traditional wooden, steel, and plastic meter boxes—namely, their susceptibility to aging and corrosion, poor insulation, inadequate cold‑resistance, limited flame retardancy, and short service life. Composite meter boxes offer superior performance, featuring excellent sealing and waterproofing, outstanding corrosion resistance, effective anti‑tampering protection, no need for a grounding wire, an aesthetically pleasing appearance, and secure locking with lead seals. They also boast a long service life. Composite cable supports, cable trench supports, and composite meter boxes are widely employed in rural and urban grid modernization projects.
SMC composites and their molded SMC products exhibit excellent electrical insulation, mechanical properties, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. Consequently, SMC‑based components find applications across a wide range of fields, primarily including the following areas:
Electrical Industry
Automotive industry
Railway vehicles
Communication Engineering
Explosion-proof electrical equipment enclosure
