Sheet molding compound (SMC) also consists of polyester resin, inert fillers, fibrous reinforcing materials, catalysts, pigments and stabilizers, release agents, and thickeners. SMC is produced using a continuous, in-line manufacturing process. To prevent the sheets from sticking together, a layer of plastic film is applied to both the top and bottom surfaces of each sheet during production; these films are typically polystyrene or polystyrene/nylon composite films. During fabrication, the resin‑based slurry is uniformly coated onto the bottom film, followed by the even dispersion of chopped glass fibers, which are randomly oriented within the slurry. A top film is then laminated over the assembly, creating a sandwich structure of predetermined thickness. After a 48‑hour curing period, the sheets are ready for compression molding.
Sheet molding compound (SMC) is used for compression molding and is typically employed for larger parts that require high mechanical strength. The glass fiber content ranges from 10% to 60%, and the glass fibers are slightly longer than those in bulk molding compound (BMC)—ranging from 1/2 inch to 1 inch (25 mm).
Sheet molding compound can be molded into complex shapes. With its excellent mechanical properties and superior appearance, it is an ideal choice for automotive Class A body panels, high-strength electrical components, commercial cabinets, personal watercraft, and a wide range of structural parts.
